Activities of La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club Nov. 2002 to present
Starting in November 2002 Past District Rotary Governor Steve Brown has made
six tips to Afghanistan; Rotarian Fary Moini was also in Afghanistan during
those trips often in advance helping with logistics and has made a separate
trips as well. Although short visits have been made to Kabul, Brown’s and Moini‘s
activities have been centered in Jalalabad.
Highlights of accomplishments to date include:
• Building a school; levels 1-12; present enrollment 2,800 students including
800 girls
• Providing financial support for female teachers at the school
• Establishing a V-SAT computer lab at Nangarhar University
• Establishing a V-SAT system at Nangarhar Public Hospital
• Establishing a V-SAT system at Nangarhar Medical School
• Establish a V-SAT computer lab at the Rotary school in Jalalabad
• Sponsoring the Chartering of the Rotary Club of Jalalabad
• Assisting the Rotary Clubs of Kabul, Logar, and Heart
• Bringing Six professors from Nangarhar University to San Diego for the month
of May 2005—Three medical professors, two ESL professors and one agriculture
professor
• Establishing a Sister Cities relationship between San Diego and Jalalabad
and bringing Jalalabad Mayor Arsalai to San Diego to foster this relationship
• Establishing a Sister Schools relationship between the Jalalabad Rotary School
and Doyle Elementary School
• Working with San Diego State University to put together a World Bank funded
Contract (approx. $2M) for capacity building at Nangarhar University emphasizing
ESL and IT.
• Arranging for the NU Chancellor to visit San Diego regarding the above mentioned
contract
• Arranging for the shipment of $2.5 M (wholesale value) of unexpired medications
to be distributed in Jalalabad
• Sending two ultra sound machines to Nangarhar Public Hospital
• Building an International Learning Center and a guest house on the Nangarhar
University Campus
• Purchasing pediatric equipment for Nangarhar Teaching Hospital
• Sending 12,000 English Dictionaries to Afghanistan
• Assisted in the funding of a micro-credit project in Nangarhar Province
• Assisted in the funding of equipping a women’s development center in Jalalabad
• Arranging for two short term scholarships from University of California San
Diego for Nangarhar University medical professors to take on-line ESL classes
for the medical profession
• Arranged for two Nangarhar University English Professors to enroll in Master’s
Degree programs at Central Michigan University and at University of San Diego.
• Facilitating World Bank funded Partnership between SDSU and NU with the emphasis
on civil engineering and construction. Approx. $2M
• Arranging for funding for all of the forgoing
Activities in the formative stages include:
• Arranging for the infrastructure necessary for all components for a “turn
key” IT system supporting certain facilities at Nangarhar University
• Establishing a “Peer to Peer Program for connecting professionals in the medical/public
health fields in Jalalabad with public professionals around the world... Key
components will include providing medical ESL on line; IT infrastructure and
training and development of the peer to peer relationships
• Appling for US Dept of State Grant—Global Connections and Exchange Program—to
connect high school students in Jalalabad to high school students in San Diego
using theinternet.
• Finding funding and human capital to support the forgoing.
